The development of local processing industries is vital to the provincial economic prosperity and the independence of rural prefectures from the urban centres. In these cases, the development of special relations with the producers is required and, by extension, with the local communities. Therefore, the success of such endeavours is often determined by the level of local support. At the same time, the fate of these industries and their infrastructures determines and at the same time is determined by the economic course of the hosting region.
In this series of images, reference is made to the agricultural processing activity of the province on the occasion of the documentation of “D. Nomikos” tomato product industry. The photos are of the company’s six factories at the Greek prefectures: Monolithos and Vlychada in Santorini, Aliartos in Boeotia, Domokos in Fthiotida, Copais in Boeotia and Farsala in Thessaly. Of those, Monolithos, Vlychada and Aliatros are not operating, while Vlychada has been turned into a museum. The “T-Factory” imagery is comprised of engine portraits and vistas of building infrastructures along with their contents. In these photographs, the sense of place is obvious, while the course of time is implicit, similar to its connection with the recent history of the local communities.
This project has been sponsored by the “D. Nomikos” company.
