This photographic series deals with the landscape of Mountain Paggaion as a complex relationship of history, mythology and ecology.
It examines the impact of human activity on the landscape, exploring the engravings on the hard granite and the limestone, the empty mining galleries, the petroglyphs, the indelible traces that reveal the life and spirit of the people who have lived there since the Bronze and Iron Age. The legends and myths of Paggaion, “the mountain with the volumes of gold, whose ground hides silver” as mentioned by Euripides, are still connected to its influence, as one often sees current excavations which testify to gold-digging activities. This historical heritage of Paggaion, shapes the perception of the people who live in the area, in terms of their land’s identity and builds a special relationship with this place.
I created these photos within a period of 1 year (2019), following a group of mountain hikers dedicated to the study of Paggaion history.
The series is in progress
