Quatre Saisons En Grèce is a photographic series in progress that borrows its title from Arthur Rimbaud’s well known poem of 1873, «A Season in Hell» (Une Saison en Enfer). A text which is doubtless timeless yet especially close to our own age. Today when everything is globalized and shades fade into the postmodern recession and voicelessness, «A Season in Hell» could be the vehicle par excellence for a new adventure, hellish or heavenly, but neither tepid nor gray. (From the preface by Christoforos Liontakis for «A Season in Hell», Gavriilidis Editions)
In these photographs the Greek landscape and especially the landscape of Crete is presented in its own right or as a backdrop for people that enact or are invested with fictitious characters. Their double identity is not the fruit of conscious intention on their behalf; it is not the product of a mise-en-scène by the photographer. Consequently the landscape itself is divided between its heavenly status and the –often ruinous- human intervention on it.
